Story

Keiko is a 30 year convenience store worker, raised in a caring family and having a quiet upbringing. She was punished early in her life for acting in weird innapropriate ways, so she developed a coping mechanism to remain quiet as to avoid any trouble. She is on the autism spectrum and finds the only place for her being normal in her work. She shares her apartment with a man who doesn’t care about her to show her sister and coworkers that she is normal and has a ‘boyfriend’. She is just happy to know that others are happy. Working in retail makes it seem to others that you are doing badly, but keiko is happy with where she is. Halfway through the story she quits her job to work at a normal office job, but when she revisits the convenience store later on, she feels a sense of homeliness. There was another instance of a previous convencience store worker who couldn’t leave this place behind. He would berate other customers for leaving dirt on the floor and leaving the fridge doors open. Keiko exhibits the same behavior when she revisits the store. Working in a convenience store seems really fun. At the end of the story, she returns back to the convenience store where she feels she belongs
