Tell Us About Yourself
I touched computers when I was 10 and taught myself programming making video games. Later on in highschool, I was introduced to linux, and it was only after that, that I got really into IT. And so these days, whenever im not doing course work, I spend a lot of time learning and preparing for ctfs, I teach myself lower level concepts, since those are what I find more interesting. Just the pure foundations of computing like how assembly works and the whole idea of esolangs. Aside from that I also run and read sci-fi, eastern philosophies when I have the time. I am trying to gather leadership experience early, im also having a lot of fun just getting involved with the campus and networking. Honestly, it just feels more ambitious and im just very excited for my first year.
Why Did You Apply To The Positions
R&D
- exploring innovative teaching methodologies\
- creating workshop experiences
- generating creative club ideas
Response
From how I understand it you have the most control over the content of the club. I canât say too much since I wasnât here to experience any of the meetings, but from a glace it seems like there are not a lot of seminars on the website. And I genuinely have a lot of meeting ideas, that I think would suit this club - most of them are things that I plan to learn myself. I was an executive member for a design club at my highschool and in that experience, most of my other execs were too busy, and so I found myself presenting more than 60% of the club meetings. I found myself making a workshop in just 2-3 days in advance: I presented:
- Linux
- Graphic design
- Game design
- 3D printing
Technology
- Maintain club website
- Troubleshoot technical issues
- Explore relevant advancements in technologies
Response
It seems like part of this role is web development. I have looked into nextJS and svelte these few months, if that matters, but I donât do a lot of web development work. I was thinking of maybe expanding this role out to include the development of applications and tools for the club itself. Creating something for students to get the club more activity, and honestly working with R&D to create meetings. Also I feel like just sharing interesting things I learn about security and AI that are emerging technologies, and i feel like this role is that outlet.
Events
- Oversee each club event and schedule
- Conduct debriefings to gather feedback
Response
I applied to this more out of personal interest, I am excited to be part of the creative process in events. I donât mind searching for sponsors, because honestly It helps me - its a networking opportunity. I understand from my experience managing my highschool club, that people enjoy events where they have an active part during the event - honestly my favorite part of hackathons is the activities away from hacking, like networking and gaming events there, and honestly I donât mind being there to manage each event.
Internal Affairs
- Integrating new members to the club
- Preparing financial reports
- Managing budgets
Response
- I can dedicate 6 hour a week
- I think it will be best if we leverage the intersectionality with other clubs
- We use the expertise of others I donât know why I applied to this to be honest, but Il say what I need to say about this role If i can benefit in it. I find that there are a lot of clubs in utsc that have a lot of intersectionality with eachother. And part of creating the best experiences is about is about knowing when to leverage the expertise of others. So, im interested in establishing those collaborations between other clubs and organizations, along with creating the events that follow with it. Maybe this is more event-focused. I am not a business student so I apologize if this is the wrong role.
About The Hackerspace
Theres kind of a lack of computer engineering spaces on campus. I mean they donât really have a computer engineering major for this university and I think thats a shame, because some of my favorite parts of computer science are about the interaction between low level hardware and the firmware and the operating systems that power software.
My Meeting Ideas
- I wanted to talk about a lot of the tools that software developers use
- Copilot
- Obsidian or notion for note management
- Because I find thinking about productivity and study habit optimization to be immensely beneficial to being a good developer
- I also wanted to make an esolang. Something stack-based really, because I find it would be a good teaching experience in low-level programming and just understanding computer science in general
- Also, security. I want to talk about the things im learning. I want to talk about reverse engineering, malware development, and security trends
Projects
I donât have many projects outside of those for schoolwork.
- I made a general purpose webscraper to download images from a site
- A software to adjust screen brightness and blue light intensity in java
- Project I made for a hackathon that is a python game
