Radicalization

Occurs in people trying to find a solution:

  • The effects of Late-stage Capitalism
  • Going through a transitional period They end up finding a dangerous solution to their problem, that takes them down the alt-right or alt-left pipeline.

Alt Right Radicalization

Entering the pipeline

Soft Sell
  • Content creators advertise themselves as moderate or left-leaning
  • They advertise a lifestyle, but do not say that it is affiliated with any politics
Infiltration
  • A thing changes in the fandom that brings political discourse
    • A black protagonist
Creator Radicalization

  2. The vocal radical minority reacts very positively
  3. The content-creator makes more racist jokes
  4. The hurt leave
  5. The only audience they have left, and that will buy things are the radicals
Slippery Slope
  • Personal connection > political affiliation
    • Laughing at a deeply racist joke is personal
    • Not laughing is political
  • Personal brings people together
  • Political drives them apart
Affirmative Words
  • “You are valuable because you are white”

Echo Chamber

Political-Apolitical
  • If the community makes a consensus on an issue, then having a personal opinion on the issue is apolitical, as it wont affect the communities opinion
  • If the community doesn’t have an opinion, and you have one, then you are considered political, and then shunned and kicked out
  • Nazi communities have a majority of nazis, thus they can thrive
Caricatured Enemy
  • The left are made fun of, and given caricatures
The Moderate And The Beast

Sensitive Enemies
  • Expressing theses opinions to women or trans, will lead to them being angry. You see this as sensitivity
Jargon
  • Meme-filled jargon to isolate those not in the know
Validated Fear
  • People in the communities reiterate the fear
    • No-Fap users share experiences of failure and disaster
    • Incels share their fear of being a virgin
      • “Yes you will die a virgin”
Toxic Recursion
  • People go to these communities to be upset
    • Anger is motivating
    • They go back to these communities for the release

The Flawed Argument

  • Alt-right leaders often rely on bad arguments that are:
    • Repeated like mantras
    • Charismatic
    • Long winded
  • They are flawed because reiterating these ideas are difficult
    • Telling a friend why, requires you to have them watch the videos
  • Repetition dulls the shock that the argument may have

Lack of Mission

The alt-right are decentralized. When they try to formalize missions, like in Charlottesville, it all goes to shit. Most of the work that is done is through online forums. As a result you have a lot of people angry that have to sit an boil in their anger. You have a lot of lone wolves that start acting out, they start shooting schools and bombing places.

Harassment = Isolation
  • The worse thing you do, the more you feel guilty
  • The more guilty you are, the harder it is to quit
  • What hes done to the left could be done to him aswell, and if he leaves, he loses the power of his community

How to exit the extremism

  1. Disillusionment from maturity
  2. Disillusionment from no results
  3. Disillusionment from realization of fake community
    • They like his skin more than his personality
  4. Shocked at extremism like Charlottesville
  5. Kicked out of the community
  6. Seperated by circumstance
    • No internet
    • Medical issue
  7. Community disappears. May be shutdown
  8. Tolerance with ‘enemy’
    • Makes some hispanic friends
  9. Makes a community that replaces this one
  10. Leaders are frauds
  11. “Me or the movement”. Keeping your girlfriend
  12. Hearing stories from former extremists
  13. Awareness of manipulation. Breadtube shit
  14. Revisit a previous ideology
    • Religion
    • Social movement
    • Fandoms
