In chapter 1, everything was in factored form. We can easily factor binomials, but when we are in third degree, fourth degree functions, we must use methods to factor outside of binomial factoring.

Terminology

Remainder Division

P(x) = x^3 - 4x^2 + 2x + 3 ; (x-3) Divisor is (x-3) Dividend is x^3 - 4x^2 + 2x + 3

Long division placeholder

Say we have an equation like P(x) = 3x^4 + 2x^3 - 6x + 1 If we wanted to long divide, we would face troubles since there is no Cubic degree in the equation. Placeholder for the cubic degree.
