ESD is when an electrical charge passes from one item to another. These can be giant electrical sparks passing into your hand from the computer. ESD can be disastrous for electronic devices. ESD takes place when 2 objects with different potential static electricity come into contact
- Much more prevalent in dry and cool environments
- EMPs are an example of ESD
ESD Preventative Measures
60% Humidity
When humidity is over 60%, ESD never occurs, but it 60% humidity is very uncomfortable.
Self-Ground
Touch exposed metal chassis to reduce the potential difference.
ESD Tools
- Anti-static wrist strap
- Anti-static pad for the computer
- Anti-static mat for standing on or sitting
- Anti-static Bag for placing components
Storage
Store components in a HVAC regulated environment 50-80 degrees farenheit.
Cut Power
- Press the killswitch at back of PSU
- Disconnect power cable
