Compounds that light up when given charge through current. These compounds emit their own light, so there is no need for a backlight. They can turn off, enabling pure black color. Commonly used in ultra-thin notebooks.

Active Matrix OLED (AMOLED)

OLED has an added TFT layer over the screen which produces better color and uses less electricity.
