- Printer: Fax or directly connect to it with computer and print something out
- PC/Laptop: general purpose computers
- Server: computers used for the purpose of storing data
- Phone: hooked in with the telephone network to allow for telecommunications
- IP Phone: I assume they are using VoIP(Voice over IP). They are hooked to the internet to allow voice over internet, rather than the traditional telephone network
- Router: device that allows the connected LAN to connect to the internet wired or wirelessly
- Switch: device that creates a LAN with all connected devices
- Frame Relay Switch: used to create WAN. Not very popular but extremely simple to configure
- Cable Modem: device that allows us the connect our LAN to the internet. Must be wired
- Access Point: wireless method of connecting LAN devices. Also allows extension of wireless coverage to allow better signal over the building.
- ASA: cisco specific firewall. Adaptive security appliance
- DSLAM: Digital Subscriber line access multiplexer. Network device used by ISP. Takes all the signals from each DSL, runs it in its multiplexer(MUX) which combines all signals into one
- Wide Area Network Switch: specialized switch used primarily for wide area networks. Its not a specific device, but rather a role of the switch. Though, it is expected that this switch be atleast fitted with tons of ports for the occasion, or be layer3 to allow wireless
- CSU/DSU: Channel service unit/Data service unit. Equivalent to a modem
- Hub: uses ethernet connections to link computers together. Very similar to a switch, but they operate on different OSI layers. Switches > hubs for the most part
- PIX Firewall: type of firewall DUH. Private Internet eXchange. Nobody uses this anymore
- Bridge: method of connecting 2 seperate networks as if they were the same network. Can be wired or wireless
- Layer3 Switch: specialized switch for use in layer 3 network layer
- Network cloud: a black box for whatever we don’t need to know for the moment
- RJ-45 connection: wired connection. Cable is copper
- Serial line: special RS-232 cable for network connection between computers. Antiquated, just use ethernet instead
- Virtual circuit: assumption of transmission over the internet
- Ethernet WAN: again, special name. Just ethernet used specifically for WAN, maybe longer cables I gather
